President Volodymyr Zelensky appears to have left a White House meeting empty-handed after failing to obtain the requested Tomahawk cruise missiles from President Donald Trump.

The Ukrainian president stated after the civil meeting that he and Trump had discussed long-range missiles, but chose not to make statements on that matter "because the United States wishes to prevent an escalation."

President Trump's Stance on Weapons Transfer

While Trump left open the possibility of supplying the missiles to Ukraine, his approach during the Washington meeting was non-committal.

"With hope they won't need it, hopefully we can get the war over without thinking about Tomahawks," Trump stated, noting that the United States required the missile systems for its own defense.

Trump acknowledged that sending the missiles would be "an escalation, but we'll be talking about it."

International Diplomatic Developments

This high-level summit came just a day after Trump spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin and agreed to hold face-to-face talks in Hungary soon.

Following the meeting, the US president used social media to call for Kyiv and Russia to "cease current positions" and conclude the conflict.

Kyiv's Perspective and Suggestions

The Ukrainian leader proposed that his country could provide unmanned aerial vehicles in exchange for the Tomahawks, a proposal that prompted positive reactions from the American president.

Zelensky also praised his counterpart on his efforts in achieving a peace agreement in the region, suggesting that the US leader could capitalize on that success to help end the conflict in his country.

Questioned about whether the possibility of Ukrainian forces having Tomahawks had influenced the Russian president to agree to meet the US leader, Zelensky responded, "It's unclear," noting that the idea had made Russia to be "afraid because it is a powerful military asset."

Asked if he was departing the US capital with greater optimism that Ukraine would get the missiles, he stated, "My approach is realistic."

Zelensky maintains that using these missiles to target Russian oil and energy facilities would severely weaken Putin's war economy.
