The Showrunner Discloses He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... At the Moment.

Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that Pluribus would turn into a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

As the debut season of the hit program reaching its finale—and a second season already in development—the writers' room reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.

On the Tremendous Audience Reaction

It would be easy to get swayed by the constant speculation and fan theories regarding Pluribus. He is doing his best to steer clear of all that.

“It's like being force fed your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by online forums.”

“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.

The Central Mystery: Does Vince Gilligan See the Ending of Pluribus?

Considering Gilligan and his team are not listening by fan response, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… with some caveats.

“We've developed some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to throw out a decent plan for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Alternatively, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.

“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Of course, one could always use the classics?

“I want Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV+.
