The Hamilton Island Resort, one of the Popular Queensland Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Sold by US Investment Giant.
A major resort island located within the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based investment group for a sum said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to build on the vision and dedication of the family owners has built in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
Details of the Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, subject to standard regulatory approvals.
The sellers issued a comment noting they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island covers over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the land is built upon, including a substantial array of amenities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is described as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a wide network of local partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that housed domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and southern states.
