Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for the second part of the final season.

The Discovery in the Mine Shaft

When she finds Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry find an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, wounding the boy in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the event involved more than a fight for life.

Similar to other plot points of the final season, the truth about the encounter is detailed in the stage play the prequel play.

A Naval Mystery and Secret Science

*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a plane later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the captain, who emerged in a vegetative state with an altered blood type.

That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to sell to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their parallel research. That traitor in the mine shaft is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is revealed about Brenner's work, the case almost certainly contained some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would genetically impart to the test subjects under Brenner's care.

A second theory, the box could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he fights the control of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how Will Byers was influenced by the entity in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

His lasting fear linked to that memory highlights how deeply scarring the incident was for him. Even as he commands the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a showdown between him and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to gain strength.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the series finale to come.
