A senior Russian army officer has been fatally wounded following an explosion in Moscow, according to an investigative body.

The incident took place on Monday morning when an bomb concealed beneath a vehicle exploded, leading to the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' unit responsible for operational readiness.

Investigators stated that one theory under investigation points to the alleged involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has remained silent.

Location of the Blast

Officials have been sent to the site, which is reportedly in a southern district of the metropolis.

Reports state the blast occurred in a vehicle lot close to a residential building.

Pattern of Assaults

Since the start of the extensive conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military personnel have been subjected to assaults within Moscow.

This most recent event echoes other high-profile incidents, such as:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was died in a automobile blast in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a bomb concealed on a scooter was triggered from afar.

While a Ukrainian source previously linked Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such allegations are rarely formally acknowledged as a matter of standard practice.

The war has increasingly seen covert operations moving into the center of the Russian capital.

The probe into General Sarvarov's death is still underway.
