Russell Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Remarks

NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this Tuesday, reacting to latest comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."

The quarterback's remarks directly referenced the infamous Bounty Gate controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.

At that time, the league determined that the Saints had rewarded players for delivering hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for one season.

What Sparked the Recent Dispute

Wilson's reaction came after Payton delivered comments following the Broncos' remarkable 33-32 win over the New York. Payton suggested that the team had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.

Additionally, Payton implied that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson instead of Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened well after our game,'" the coach stated.

Context of the Coach-QB Relationship

  • The quarterback was traded to the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245M contract.
  • The Broncos finished 4-11 in his first season before Denver hired Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a stint in broadcasting.
  • The coach replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a move that prevented the quarterback from getting injured.

Had Wilson remained on the roster by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was released, marking the ugly split between the player and his mentor.
