European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
